Nipissing Orthopaedic Laboratory Inc. first opened its door to the public in 1990 after local area physicians and health care professionals urged me to establish a prosthetic and orthotic facility in the community, owing to the lack of service available locally.
Our Mayor at the time, Stan Lawlor presided over the ribbon cutting ceremony which took place in August of 1990. Friends, family, and a number of early patient supporters were in attendance.
Our early and rapid growth was partly due to obtaining two contracts with Laurentian Hospital in Sudbury, a facility in dire need of a Certified Orthotist and later a Certified Prosthetist as a result of staffing shortages. This allowed me to start hiring trained staff and to start full-time prosthetic services which up until 1993, only included orthotic appliance service. Later in 1995, I started overseeing a monthly prosthetic and orthotic clinic at the Timmins and District Hospital and Children’s Treatment Centre, which continues to this day. This necessitated moving to larger premises on Airport Road in 1996 and finally to our current location at 269 Airport Road in 2002. In 2010, we started our monthly brace and articial limb clinic at the Temiscaming General Hospital in New Liskeard.
I sincerely want to thank all the referring Physicians, Physiotherapists, Health Care Professionals that have been instrumental to our success. Referrals from all health professionals are the backbone of our business. I also want to thank our clients and people of North Bay and area for their support and patronage.
